Welcome To
The Ashwell Project
In 2020, Ashwell Museum and the University of York joined forces to capture the diverse heritage of our beloved village, Ashwell.

About the Project

The main goal of The Ashwell Project was to create a digital community where we can actively engage with our local heritage, increase pride and knowledge of our tangible and intangible heritage, and make Ashwell's rich history easily accessible to everyone.

We aimed to:

Explore different ways to collect your anecdotal stories
Understand the types of intangible heritage captured through these methods
Look at how digital applications can help share both our tangible and intangible heritage

Our Village

Ashwell is a small village in the north of Hertfordshire, and it's a treasure trove of heritage, spanning from prehistoric times to the present day. Our tangible heritage includes monuments, religious sites, structures from the time of the Black Death, a series of natural springs used by people for centuries, and remains of a Roman temple.

Our intangible heritage is just as rich, with what is believed to be one of the oldest cricket clubs in the country, local pottery artisans, and modern-day recreational activities.

How We Did It

We used a variety of methods to collect your stories, including engaging with existing heritage groups on social media, distributing paper forms at community venues, and allowing direct uploads through the app.

We moderated the collected narratives to ensure they were authentic and compliant with data regulations. We also used a digital application to help capture and share our cultural heritage in a participatory way.

As you open the map, you will be welcomed by a screen. Click "Get Started". You can choose to become a member or not depending on how you feel. Click "Ok". You may choose to sign up with Email, Facebook, Twitter or Google or click "not now". Next you will need to allow notifications, analytics data and state whether you are older than 16. To do this click on the boxes. You will then be asked if you would like push notifications. Click "Notify Me". Then you will be in!

  • Map

Once you have clicked on Map, you can choose to read local stories, look at written extracts about Ashwell or choose other. To begin with all will be open, however if you would only like one of them click on the other two to ensure that this is the one available. If you would like to search for a particular story, please click the magnifying glass and then search. Type in the place you would like to look for. As you type, the points on the map will be reduced leaving the ones which match what you are looking for. You can then click on the point and then the black box that appears. This will tell you a story of that particular place. You can add comments by clicking "Post comments". Please be aware innapropriate comments will be removed. To go back to the map, please click the arrow in the top lef hand corner. You can also have a list of places by clicking the four lines in the top right hand corner and click on one of the options listed.

  • Add a site

If you feel there is a story missing, please click on "Add Site". A form will then appear and you can type in the name of the site, where it is and the story that you associate with the site. To add the site, click the "add" button. This will load a message saying success. Click "back" and then in the top left hand corner click the arrow back. The story will be sent to me so I can make sure that it is appropriate for all users.

  • Sites

To navigate yourself to a particular place, you can choose the "Sites" button. Cick on this, and a list of many sites will appear. Choose the site you are interested in or press down and hold with one finger and move the other up or down to get more places. Click on the site. If you are on a computer or laptop, a message will appear saying "open in maps". If on a phone a map will load and it will take you to the site.

  • Feedback

If you would like to provide me with some feedback about how you feel about the project, click the "Feedback" button. This will load up a form. Answer the questions in the form. The majority are multiple choice, so please click on the answer you agree with. For example, for the question "Overall, do you like the app?" and the answer was yes, click "yes", alternatively click "no". There are two questions which ask for you to type. These are "If yes, what feature would it be?" and "Any other comments?". for these click on the box underneath the question and type your answer.
